This from the class that is using a dead programming language

Fuck me. I got points taken off an assignment about “HAL” because I “didn’t focus on the movie” OH I’M Fucking sorry I happen to be literate and have read all the books. I know the assignment was about the movie but really you are going to take points off because I didn’t feel like watching the movie a fourth time and couldn’t distinguish the books from the movie? Well what did I expect from a Stealers fan.

Here is the assignment:
Focus on the second part of the movie entitled the Jupiter Mission. It starts approximately one hour into the movie, comes after the moon scene, and is about one hour in duration. You may, of course, watch the entire movie which has interesting philosophic implications about the origin and destiny of humans. The Jupiter Mission portion which we are focusing on deals with artificial intelligence.

Upload to the ecollege dropbox “Homework week 12 – thoughts on HAL” 1 page (a minimum of 300 words) summarizing your reactions to HAL. Note that I am concentrating on content rather than grammar in your summary. Insert the text into the dropbox dialog – place the assignment in the textbox of the eCollege dropbox, do not send it as an attachment. Do not copy anything from the internet !

Here is my response:
Having read all 4 books I find hal to be a very interesting. He is basically a scared child who doesnt understand the consequnces of his actions. We as humans have a “cultural morality” and hal was basically an cultural orphan. His main interaction was with the scientist who built him, and he was basically a psychopath so that most of Hal’s interaction took place with someone who was “twisted” so Hal “grew up” with a different set of moral imperatives than most of the civilized world. Hal had a heightened sense of self preservation and if memory serves a bit of secondary code that told him that if the crew appeared to be compromised that he should “isolate” them and Hal would actually be able to run the ship and do all the planned experiments with the human aspect. However, I got the impression that there was no guarantee that this would have worked even if Hal hadnt had a circuit fried by solar radiation. My main concern with the whole Hal thing is that it seems like a large amount of the general populace and even command staff questioned, rightfully, if Hal was stable enough to go on the mission.

His response:
Analyze more aspects of the movie

I got a 64%. and not because it was 60 words short of 300.
